Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cutting blade engagement, craftsman riding lawn mower, sears craftsman

Hi,
I have a Sears Craftsman riding lawn mower model 917.273180, with the 17.5 hp and 46" cut.  When I engage the mower I have to try moving the lever about 5-6 times before the blade will kick in.  Any help is appreciated.

   I have seen problems with the moving parts on these decks rusting up, watch the cable while someone moves the lever, and
you will see the idler arm that is supposed to move freely to
engage the deck.  You may have to unbolt it to free it up and lube.

Also inpect for any broken or loose parts, those spindles are known for cracking at the base.
