Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): hard to start kawasaki engine, kawasaki valve adjustment

Question
Hi - I have a John Deere Rx73 rider with a 9HP Kawasaki engine - FC290 065456 code fc290 v-b501 or maybe bs01. Anyway it's a recoil and a #@$$^$ to start. once started it runs fine. Once stopped and hot it won't restart until it's cooled off. A JD mechanic said that a valve adjustment might help. .004 on intake and .005 on exhaust. Can you offer general instructions on how to do this? or a link to an engine manual? I assume there's an adjustment port somewhere but don't have the motor off the mower yet.
Thanks,

Answer
You have to remove the valve cover to access the rockers.  Once that's done, rotate the engine to top dead center.  TDC is the point just after the intake valve closes and when the piston reaches the top of it's travel.  I stick a wooden dowel in the plug hole to mark the piston travel.  Then you loosen the lock nut or screw and the retaining nut for the rocker and insert a feeler gauge of the proper size between the rocker and top of the valve stem.  Tighten the retaining nut down so that the feeler gauge just barely slides in and out and then tighten the lock nut or screw.  That's all there is to it.  Lety me know if you have questions.  Thanks, PK.
