Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Overheating B & S engine, jagged edges, straight cut

Question
Hi Scott

Simple question for you - I hope!

My John Deere X120 was working well - until a few moments ago when (for the second time today) it spluttered to a halt with white smoke rising from the engine.

I have read your other (excellent) answers on this point, and have checked oil level and tightness of bolts etc. All is OK.

Yesterday I mowed for over an hour with no problem, but the grass in today's field is longer and slightly damp.

Could that be the explanation?

Seems too simple!

Could it be that I am setting the throttle too low? I normally have it set to the maximum, but (for a number of complex reasons) I lowered it to the central position today.

Your help would be very gratefully received.

Best

Ray

Answer
Hello Ray,
Your lawnmower is simply straining too hard to cut the long, damp grass. I would go slower, and raise the deck a level higher, as well as using about 3/4 throttle. Also, check your blade. Make sure it's in good condition, so that it cuts the grass rather than simply wacking it. Mow a section, check the freshly cut grass for quality, and make sure the grass has a clean, straight cut, and not jagged edges, which would suggest being blown apart rather than cleanly cut. Best Wishes!

Let me know how it goes.
