Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Stihl FC 75 Edger, stihl dying

Question
Edger runs for about 6 to 8 minutes then stops. It will not restart till it is cold. It has fresh fuel. Thanks WALT

Answer
There are several things that could be at fault.  Crank seals, the carburetor, the fuel lines, the fuel filter, the tank vent, the ignition, the ring seal, the exhaust and others.

What you have to do is start eliminating causes.  When it dies, check and see if the plug still fires.  If not, the coil may be breaking down.  If so, then I'd check the compression both cold and warm.  Be careful pulling the plug on a hot engine as you can damage the threads.

You can pull the spark arrestor off the muffler and see that the screen is clean.  If you're not using a low-ash synthetic mixing oil, go ahead and switch to that and use a product like SeaFoam or Techron in the fuel.  This will help prevent carbon fouling problems.

You'd need some special tools to check the crank seals so that will need to wait.

I don't know offhand which fuel line system yours has, but you can check them for leaks and replace the filter. If yours has a tank vent, it will be on a fuel line from the tank and will have a little filter on the end.  You can also loosen the gas cap and see if this helps, just be careful about not spilling any fuel while running the engine.

This is where I would start.  Try these things and let me know what you find and we can go from there.  Thanks, PK.
