Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman / Techumseh recoil start, self propelled lawnmower, propane torch

Question
Hi, Tim - I have a Craftsman self-propelled lawnmower, 917.374590 with a Techumseh Eager-I engine. The recoil starter will not engage the drive dogs to start the engine. Have removed the recoil, lubed the drive dogs, and they will still not come out to engage the flywheel. Short of replacing the recoil start ( not worth it?) any tips on getting the dogs to free up? Thanks.

Answer
Hello Jim, not familiar with the drive dogs. However I do have some advice for what it's worth. What I still do when I cannot get something out because it oxidized, from the weather, wind, moisture, water, etc. (Causes rust)I take my propane torch(bernzomatic) if it is metal suface and put heat to it and begin pounding on the part; because when putting heat to something generally weakens the part. Or take a brass punch and begin tapping on the part, or if you can just take the parts apart and give it a excellent cleaning.Make sure you have good head hammer 3lb. Preventative maintenance is the key too many things.
