Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 10 or 12 horsepower?, wheel horse, spec number

Question
Hello David, I asked another expert this question on the 22nd but have not gotten a reply. There is a link to go to if you have not heard back in three days and when I go there is says "3 days has not elapsed yet. Please come back later." I don't want to step on any ones toes so if you are not allow to answer my question I will understand. I could not find a "Contact Us" link for allexperts to find out what is going on. The only thing in the FAQ's is to check your SPAM but it's not there either. Here is the question I asked:
I was hoping you could help me determine if a Kohler engine is a 10 or 12 horsepower. The plate that is riveted to the flywheel cover has most of the paint worn off so I can only make out a K of the model number and a stamped S.  I do know this is the K series engine. The serial number is stamped on the plate and it reads 925735. The spec number is also stamped and it reads 46264C. Can you tell by these numbers what horsepower this is? The guy selling it says it’s 12hp but I want to be sure. He took this off of a Wheel Horse but he didn’t have the tractor anymore. I want to put it on my Wheel Horse which is a 12hp. If you can tell me anything else about this engine that would be great also.
Thanks, Robert."

Answer
Based on the Spec number you gave me you are looking at a 10hp Kohler engine. It is a Model K241.

this is a VERY OLD engine and parts are VERY difficult to find.  Now that I said that although its old its a goodie.  If your crankshaft is the right size it should fit on your tractor without any problem.

Take note of the oil pan on the bottom of the engine though, some are flat some are not.  If this is the only thing holding you up, simply change the oil pan.

I don't think your stepping on any toes here,  This is peak season in the lawn and garden industry so I am sure the other expert you sent your question to is simply buried with repairs and service now.  In this industry we have about 90 days to make our money for the whole year.  So we make hay when the sun shines.

Good luck on your engine project!

Dave
