Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine starting and clutch release issues, clutch release, safety interlock

Question
I have a craftsman garden tractor 917.273022.
This mower is about 9 years old( parents gave it to me).
Until yesterday it was starting fine, but now it will not crank, the engine turns over though. I replaced the plugs today because they were black.still no fire not even with a little carb cleaner.
I took the bowl on the carb off and it was full so i assume the engine is flooded but after 8 hrs shouldnt it be clear?
Any ideas?
The other issue was when the clutch was released the engine would die(prior to the not starting issue above)
The safty switch has been bypassed since i cant locate a part.
Please help

Answer
Anthony,

No fire indicates only one thing,  NO SPARK  there is a black wire on your engine that is your kill ground wire.  It my be plugged in under the engine cover or there may be a spade on the side of the engine.  Temporary disconnect this wire and try starting your engine.  What you are doing here is bypassing the whole safety interlock system and separating the engine from the tractor.  If you cant determine the wire, remove the blower housing and unplug the SMALL black wire that is attached to the coil.  I bet it will start.

If this is the case you will need to test each interlock switch on your tractor to figure out which one is giving you grief.

Good Luck... Don't get frustrated....
