Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 25 HP Kohler Stalling out, kohler dies after 20 minutes

Question
I have a 25HP Kohler Command Spec #68562 Model CH25S. This engine is on a 1999 Grasshopper mower. The mower runs great for the first 20 minutes and then it shuts down as if it runs out of gas. I have already replaced the fuel filter but it did not help. It always dies when it is under full load. If I shut the blades off in time and idle it back I can keep it running. Fuel Delivery problem? Thanks.

Answer
The first thing to try is the simple things.  Loosen the gas cap when it starts to die and see if that makes a difference.  You may notice a whoosh of air rushing in and the sides of the tank expanding.

If that doesn't work, then the next time it shuts down, pull the fuel line loose from the carb and try cranking the engine.  See if fuel will flow.

If fuel does flow, then put an ignition tester on the ignition wires and see if it's firing.

I think you're right about there being a fuel delivery problem, it's just a matter of tracking it down, and eliminating the ignition as the source.

Try these things and let me know what you get and we'll go from there.  Thanks, PK.
