Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 318 misses upon startup, valve clearances, wd40

Question
Hi John,
I have a 1988 318 with the P218G onan engine that misses when it is first
started.  After it runs for a few minutes it runs great....Nice and smooth with
lots of power and now obvious smoke.  This only happens at startup,  When it
is cold outside it takes longer for the engine to run smooth.  I thank you in
advance for your expert advice.

Answer
Hello Tony:

>>What is the Engines Compression?
>>Have you Checked the Intake Gaskets and made Sure they are Not Leaking Air into the Intake when the Engine is Running?
>>Use WD40 and Spray the Connection Points while the Engine is Cold and Running.
>>If the Engine Clears Up and Runs Correctly when the Spray Hit a Connection Point, then that Gasket is Leaking or there is a Crack at that Point in the Intake.
>>What is the Valve Clearances?
>>When was the Carburetor Last Soaked and Cleaned?
>>Thanks.
