Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Rider mower, briggs stratton, fuel nozzle

Question
QUESTION: Engine starts and runs for about 1 minute.  Never gets full RPM's, then dies.  Had fuel in oil.  Also do you have a schematic.
Briggs & Stratton
Model:  28R707
Type:  1120E1
Code:030109ZE

Thank you.

ANSWER: You have a carburetor in need of a rebuild and possibly replacement.  The reason there was gas in the oil is because the needle isn't seating fully and is allowing gas to constantly flow.  Usually the needle problem is from simple wear, sometimes the float itself is leaking.  Either way, the carb needs to come apart and be cleaned in a soak tank or ultrasonically, spray cleaners won't usually do a good enough job.  Also, if it has a brass seat, the seat may need to be polished.  There is also probably a solenoid on the bottom of the float bowl.  This will need to be cleaned an possibly replaced.  It's job is to shut-off the flow of fuel through the fuel nozzle when the key is shut off.  This is to prevent backfiring, but also helps to prevent your problem.

This is a fairly common problem and we end up replacing about half the carburetors used on these engines.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.

QUESTION: Could you advise of a site that I could view a schematic of this carburetor? Thanks for the information.

Answer
There aren't really schematics available but there are illustrated parts lists.  You can use the one on my website, http://www.grandjunctionsmallengines.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx
or any site that carries Briggs parts.  Just select your engine model and type from the dropdown lists and select carburetors and there will be the exploded view of the carbs available on your engine.

Thanks, PK.
