Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs Motor Swap, hp briggs, engine models

Question
John,

I'm taking out of a mower a 20 hp Briggs vertical opposed engine Models #461707-0143-E and installing a 22 hp vertical v-twin model 407777-0128-E1.  The 20 hp motor has a plug with two wires (one red and one white)and a single yellow wire.  What are these wires?  The 22 hp motor has a plug with two wires (one black and one white) and a single red wire.  What are these wires?  The two engines appear to have different electrical systems and I want to adapt the 22hp motor to the mower.  Please let me know if you can help.

Thanks,

Mike

Answer
Hello Mike:

>>From your Description it Sounds like you are Talking about the Charging Coil/Stator Wires and the Engine Shut Off Wire.
>>Usually the Plug with 2 Wires is the Charging/Stator Leads and the Single Wire is the Cut Off Wire to the Coil/Ign Module.
>>Go to this Site Addy; http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3438&p... and Use the Information and the Test Chart Links to Properly Determine the Charging System on your Engine and Correctly Test the Charging Sytem to Determine if it is Charging Correctly. These Charts and the Testing can be Used for Almost All Small Engine Charging Systems (Kohler, Tecumseh, Honda, ect). This Site Addy; http://www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/alternator_id.pdf  will Assist you in Determining you Charging System on this Engine.
