Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): kohler 14 hp ohv, craftsman model, slow position

Question
QUESTION:
"I have a Craftsman model 917.257550. Serial#041494E 004274 Kohler 14hp spec. CV14-1452. Just so you know i am not real familiar with small engines but i have learned alot fooling around with engine for the past few days.

Engine has spark. Will start with gas or ether in carb. Have soaked carb. in "gunk" carb cleaner twice. Plug is good. Choke seems to work properly. Have been successful at starting with throttle in slow position. But not every time. Once engine runs it runs perfect. Any advice would help. thanks

ANSWER: Hello Aaron, try making adjustments to carburetor. Firstly, high speed mixture, or what small engines mechanics refer to are jets. Jets are adjusted when the engine is running. Just play with the screws until it is consistant. Happy decision making!

QUESTION: i have been told in most carbs. the jet will come out like a screw and you can clean it however in this particular carb. the jet will not come out nor do i see any type of adjustment for the jet itself..is there a such thing as a disposable carb.??Once this one goes bad you just have to buy a new one....I can try to adjust the one screw i see just to see what happens..any more ideas feel free to let me know.........

Answer
Hello Aaron, get yourself a manual and see what it says, about what you are experiencing. However, I've never even heard of a disposable carburetor. The carburetor(s) I have heard about and worked on are suction lift, automagic. How one can tell if he or she is working on a suction lift carburetor is  it is generally mounted on top of the fuel tank. This type of carburetor is dependent on vacuum and or low pressure. How this is caused is by when the piston goes down, it creates a low pressure in the venturi.
