Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere Lawnmower JS 63 C, john deere lawnmower, blowups

Question

John, I purchased a used JS 63 C lawnmower that looks pretty good and cuts great. However, it will not propel itself. Nothing happens when I pull the lever. The person I bought it from was not the owner (only doing the owner a favor) so I know nothing about its history.

Is this likely to be an expensive repair? I paid $95 for it but hesitate to take it to be repaired if it is going to be a lot of money. I know this is a difficult question to answer without knowing the problem but I thought you might have had some previous experience with this or similar mowers.

Thanks for your time.

Answer
You can go to JD parts online and look at the parts blowups,
and it looks like a standard self propelled pushmower setup.
You have to look at the cable, and follow it down to the transmission,
and determine what happens, or does not happen, when you actuate the
lever.  It could just be a broken belt or spring.
Normally, when you engage the lever, it just pulls the trans
tight against the belt, and the trans engages the wheels.
So you will have to take a look, and the jd parts link will give you
an idea of cost.
