Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere Sabre 1338 Gear, will not start, lawn mower parts discountonlineparts kohler courage lawnmower repair coil

Question
Jon - I just bought a used 1996 Sabre 1338 from a neighbor.  It ran fine the first time I used it.  I stored it in garage, and then tried to start yesterday, it initially cranked up but when I backed off on the gas it died.  I tried again, same thing, then the 3rd time it would just crank and crank w/out starting.  I took out the plug, definitely getting gas.  I checked the seat safety switch (with meter) seems fine.  I know there is a brake and blade safety switch.  I let the brake off and it would not crank at all (so I assume this switch is working).  I did the same for the blades, and same results.  Finally, I noticed that it will now crank over in neutral or any other gear (including reverse).  I did not think that should happen, but again it still does not start.  Any ideas?  THanks in advance for any help you could be.

Answer
Hi Stephen, it should not crank in any gear, you most likely have a gear selector safety switch gone bad. To find out for sure, look at the throttle control bracket on side of engine. There is a small lug with a wire attached to it and another wire that disappears up under the flywheel housing cover. Unhook the small wire and crank the engine. This will remove all safety switches from circuit, if it starts it is definitely in safety circuit.    MAKE SURE MACHINE IS IN NEUTRAL PRIOR TO TRYING THIS.  Hope this helps.  If you need any outdoor power equipment parts please let us know at http://www.discountonlineparts.com/
