Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower lower seal replacement, craftsman eager 1, rubber mallet

Question
Oil slowly leaks from around shaft under this 9-year old mower. It is a Craftsman Eager-1 (Tecumseh) 6.75 hp model# 143.016702. I was able to find the correct part number for the lower seal but I'm not sure how to replace it. Can you give me directions or advice? I'm fairly handy, but if its time-consuming, I may just take it to a repair shop.

Answer
Hello Neil, I will give directions and some advice. It should not be that difficult to tackle. Firstly, clean the engine, and then inspect it for bolts, there will probably be around four bolts maybe more maybe less. It depends. Secondly, if you decide to take out the bolts keep yourself orangnized. (We want time on your side). There is a plate that will come off, take a rubber mallet and tap easy on all the sides, this should loosen the plate. Thirdly, once the plate is off the seal should be on the plate. Take a brass punch and just tap around it the seal should pop out.Once everthing is completed reverse the order. Moreover, if want to take it in it will cost money. However, the satisfaction comes when it is done. Why? because you decided to maintain good order when it comes to fixing your lawnmower. Either way we look at this it's time.
