Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 3.75hp Craftsman Tiller want start., rust holes, rubber diaphragm

Question
Motor:B & S Family YBSXS  1481HH 274459. Mod. 094202 Type:0115E. Motor would not start after the winter. Will run on start gas. May run for 5 sec. with full choke and throttle, and then stop. Tried to clean the carb as this helped last spring, but it did not help this year.Put new sealant between carb and gastank.Put new and fresh gas on the tank.Seemed to me that the motor would run for 5 sec. when it had be standing for a while. Almost like it runs out of gas? Any suggestion?

Answer
Generally, you should replace the gasket and not use sealant, but
aside from that, the most important thing to focus on is the side
of the carb next to the muffler, it has 4 small screws, remove them and the cover, there is a rubber diaphragm under it, a ring and spring, this is what pumps the fuel up from the tank, from there
it is deposited in the small bowl at the top of the tank, under the carb, with this removed, you will see two small holes that the little
flappers cover, blow those passages out, if the diaphragm is stiff or
ripped, replace it.
After reassembling, it will take several pulls to fill that bowl
and then start the mower, so some more priming may be helpful.
Also, if the bowl under the carb was rusty, there may be some rust holes that let fuel run back to the tank, which can be a real problem, but check the diaphragm first, that may be all you need
to do.
