Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S - no spark, coil wire, code numbers

Question
QUESTION: B&S 130292 Type 0159. My tiller hasn't been started since last year. Tonight, after dark, I went out removed the coil wire from the plug and set it close to the top of the plug and pulled the starter. There was no spark. I reset the wire and tried again. Still no spark.

When doing this test, will it work with the wire close to the plug, or should it be close to a part of the engine?

When there is no spark, what is the most likely problem. Bad coil, points and condenser, etc.?

Thanks.

ANSWER: The third set of your engine's numbers, the code numbers, reveal
that manufacture date of the engine, if the code numbers start with 84 or lower, then your engine likely has points, to check the spark, use a new plug, and plug it on the wire, and lay the side of the plug against the metal of the engine and test again, if no spark
then you need to pull the starter cover.  If it has points, it is far easier to just buy the newer electronic coil, cut the wire to the points, bolt it on and go, otherwise you have to pull the flywheel, etc...

Let me know what you find.

QUESTION: Do you have a part number for the electronic ignition for this engne?

Answer
The Briggs part number is #397358, it will have instructions
on a card you will use as a gapping tool as well, and some wires, if you need them, and a flywheel key, if you need.  I just leave the
points under the flywheel alone, and don't worry about them.
