Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Follow up on Craftsman, transmission pulley, drive pulley

Question
This is about the riding mower that wont go into gear, after the transmission was disengage all winter. I checked the belt and it's off in the rear. What's the best way to fix it before I make matters worse. And what did I do to cause this? Thanks for your help,John

Answer
John:

You did not do anything wrong.  Sometimes belts come off for no apparent reason. Perhaps there was stick or something that caused the belt to fall off.

If your LUCKY you can simply disengage the clutch/brake which will loosen the belt and "roll" the belt back onto the transmission pulley. However I am afraid that squealing noise you were referring to has caused the belt to get wedged very tight between the transmission and pulley. IF the battery is located under the seat, remove the battery and the battery box and look down to the transmission.  Are you able to remove the cooling fan and drive pulley on the transmission, this sometimes works as well.

Many times the belt will have to be cut off and a new one installed.  If you have never installed a drive belt from Engine to Transmission, leave this one to the pros.  Find a small engine shop that has a Heftee Lift which will facilitate them in the replacement of the drive belt in the most efficient manner.

If you decide to tackle the belt replacement yourself, make notes of how the belt is routed, the belt guides, springs etc.

Good Luck, I'm glad we got to the ROOT cause of your problem.
