Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): peerless transaxle, peerless transaxle, john deere lx172

Question
I have an early 90's John Deere LX172 rider with a peerless series 801 5 speed transaxle.  I just bought this as a parts donor for another LX172.  The only problem with the mower is that it is in 1st gear and the shifter moves with absolutely no resistance and will not shift gears. It feels as if the shifter is not connected internally.  I am wondering if this could possibly be a simple inexpensive fix or should I just swap transaxles?

Answer
Hello Stephen:

>>This should be a Fairly "Easy Fix".
>>This Problem is Usually Caused by the Shifter Fork Breaking.
>>The Breakdown at the JD Site Shows a Tuff Torq Transaxle in the LX172 Model.
>>If this is a Peerless Transaxle, then
You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the P. Then Select Peerless. Then Select To View Parts List Click Here in the Upper Right of the Page. Then Select the Series Transaxle. Then Select the Transaxle File for your Transaxle.
