Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman LT4000 Transmission problem 6 speed., craftsman lt4000, differential gear

Question
QUESTION: Hi john i have a craftsman lawnmower which something has gone wrong with the transmission. when i put it in gear, it grinds and eventually would go in gear and now it doesnt at all. when i spin the Pulley on top the wheels do not spin. i took the transmission apart, and was browsing around and i pulled the 2 axels out of the "differential gear" which has 2 gears on a Pin that are the same as the gears on each end of the axel. and one of those gears inside the differential gear has a tooth missing would this cause my lawnmower to not work? thanks for the help!!

ANSWER: Hello James:

>>Depend on the Transaxle Model, 1 Tooth can cause the Transaxle to Not Move at All.
>>The Planetary/Satelite Cluster is the Gear the Tooth was Missing Off of.
>>I would Prefer to See a Breakdown of the Transaxle before I say for Sure.
>>On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You.
>>Thanks.

QUESTION: I looked on the transmissionb case and it said a Spicer transmission 4360-48
         137763
         line 1
         2-19-93

ANSWER: Hello Again James:

>>Thanks for the Model Numbers (4360-48).
>>You can View a Breakdown of the Transaxle at this Site Addy; http://www.m-and-d.com/dana_foote_parts.html and Scroll Down to the View Dana/Foote Parts Diagram Window. Now Scroll in this Window to your Model Transaxle and Select it.
>>I Reviewed the Breakdown for this Transaxle and 1 Tooth Missing from the Planetary/Satellite Cluster in this Model Transaxle would Not cause the Transaxle to Stop Pulling.
>>Use the Breakdown and make Sure there are No Other Components Broken/Sheared.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: thanks for that site. i have reviewed it and looking at it are you sure its the planetary gear? i am looking at the break down now and it says it is number 59 and correct me if im wrong it is a Gear miter 15Teeth? now would this cause it to stop working?

Answer
Hi James:

>>This is the Reason for Using the Site Addys and Breakdowns that I Direct the Questioners to. It Helps to Ensure I am Understanding the Part/Component about which we are Discussing.
>>The Planetary/Satellite Cluster Consists of the Breakdown #'s, 55, 58, and 59 with the Associated #'s 56 and 57.
>>Usually 1 Tooth Missing from Either Gear #59 will Not Cause the Unit to Stop Working, However, I Just Spoke with my Dana/Foote Rep and he Informs me that the Design of the Planetary/Satellite of this Model Transaxle will Not Operate Correctly (the Tractor/Mower will Usually Hesitate then Move then Hesitate and Move Again or as in this Case Sometimes Not Move at All) with Any of the Teeth Missing on the Planetary/Satellite Gears. I Knew about the Move and Hesitate Symptom but the Not at All Symptom is a New one for me.
>>He Suggested you Replace the #59 Gear and Any Other Part that May be Worn and then the Transaxle should Work Properly Again.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
