Answer
Hello Ed:

>>This Scotts Mower was Manufactured by Murray.
>>You can View a Breakdown of this Mower At this Site Addy; http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Lookup. Select the Model Tab. Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers (22815X7A). Now Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Now Select Sectional View. Now Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View.
>>This is a 2000 Model Mower and it should have an Briggs OHV (Over Head Valve).
>>There are 2 Primary Reasons for this Problem on the OHV Engines. 1- the Carburetor Float Needle Valve is Not Seating Correctly and Gas is Contaminating the Crankcase Oil and  2- the Head Gasket is Blown Between the Push Tube Galley and the Compression Chamber.
>>If the Engine is a Briggs OHV Engine and the Oil Does Not have Gas in it, then the Head Gasket is Blown Between the Push Tube Galley and the Compression Chamber (Cylinder).
>>Replace the Head Gasket.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and the First 4 Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF.
>>The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. You can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.
>>Once you have the Correct Model Numbers, you can Use this Site Addy; http://outdoorpowerinfo.com/engine_specs/ and Select the Proper File from the Briggs Engine Information Section to get the Proper Torque Specification for the Head and Valve Specifications for Setting the Valve Clearances.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
