Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starter for 10hp B&S, converting to electric start

Question
Hello, we have a 5000 watt generator with a 10HP B&S on it.  The model is 19E412, type 013101 and code is 9701181A.  This thing should have been electric start as its become too difficult to pull start it.  Do you know if it can be changed to electric start and where I could find the parts?  Thanks, Kevin

Answer
Electric start can be added.  The question is what's involved.  If your flywheel already has a toothed starter gear, then it's probably going to be pretty easy.

The other thing to look for is if the block is already drilled and tapped for the starter mounting.  I believe if you look on the side of the engine opposite the carb and exhaust you will see two bosses at the flywheel side of the block.  They should be about 2" apart and vertical to each other.  I think the lower boss is about 2-3" from the base of the engine.  If they're already drilled and tapped, then you're in business.

If your flywheel doesn't have a toothed gear, then you'll need to pull the flywheel and see if it's drilled and tapped for one.  If it is, then all you need is the gear.  If it isn't, then you'll have to buy a flywheel.

You don't need an alternator, but if your engine already has one, you can use it.  You will need to charge the battery from time to time, you can just use a battery charger, or if your generator has a built in 12v charger, that will wotk just fine.

You'll need some sort of switch, some cables, the starter, mounting bolts, starter cover and whatever you need for the flywheel.  You can see the illustrated parts list and prices at the following link.

Let me know about your flywheel and the mounting bosses and we'll go from there.  Thanks, PK.
