Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Peerless 801-056, tecumseh peerless, transmission

Question
Hello i just picked up  a Peerless transmission 801-056 i am replacing my old transmission with the peerless because it blew on me. i think it blew because Grease was coming up through where the pulley is so therefor all the grease came out. i was wondering does the Peerless have Oil in it or is it grease? and if its grease can i change it to oil?

Answer
The Peerless 801 uses Bentonite grease.  You can't mix any other type of grease with this and you can't use oil/gear oil.  I say can't, obviously you could, but you'd probably wear out the transmission pretty quickly.

The part number for the Tecumseh grease is 788067C.  I have it listed for 18.50 a 32oz tube.  If you're rebuilding an 801, you'll need at least 2 tubes.

Now on the axle bearings, you don't use the Bentonite, you use EP,(extreme pressure) grease.

If you're going to go into one of these transmissions, you need a service manual.  The Tecumseh Tech Manual is P/N 740045.  I have it listed at $11.75.  Or you can download a free copy at http://www.smallcarplans.com/manual.pdf

These are pretty good transmissions and hold up pretty well.  It should do good for you.

Let me know if you have questions.  Thanks, PK.
