Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler K301 connecting rod, maximum tolerances, rod bolts

Question
I'm the process of rebuilding a K301S and i' wondering if I need crankshaft journals for this engine. When i broke it down I did not notice that there were any crankshaft journals, and there was no metal pieces other than the broken connecting rod.The cylinder walls were mot mark or scored from the rod breaking honed out the cylinder to remove light scratching and installed new rings and connecting rod.

Answer
Do you mean do you need bearing inserts?  The crank journal is the part of the crankshaft that the rod bolts to.

As far as I know you don't.  I don't see them mentioned in that manual at all for any model.

You do need to check the clearance on the rod though.  You can use Plasti-gage for that.  Or if you have micrometers and snap gauges or calipers, but Plasti-gage works fine for non-performance small engine work.  I would strongly recommend you obtain a service manual for your engine when doing this sort of work.  You have several clearances that need to be checked and the minimum and maximum tolerances will be listed in it.
