Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan Pro, Model PR20H42STC Transaxle, hydro gear transaxle, proper manuals

Question
QUESTION: Hello John, I have a Hydro Gear transaxle in the above lawn tractor. This mower goes fine "Forward " . My problem is going in reverse. It will just creep along in reverse. If I try to backup a very small incline , forget it. This has been going on for awhile ,but it is getting progressively worse. I have tried adjusting the linkage , but there was no way this came lose and moved. Do you have any suggestions on this? I was told  that this is a sealed unit by a repair person, but I don't know if that is true. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Hello Danny:

>>The Poulan Breakdown for this Unit Does Not Show the Hydro Transaxle Breakdown.
I Require the Hydro Transaxles Model Numbers.
>>On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You.
>>Some Hydro-Gear Transaxles are Not Serviceable and Other Models are. With the Transaxle Model Numbers I can Assist you Better.
You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the H. Then Select Hydro-Gear. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing.
Have you Replaced the Drive Belt? If the Drive Belt is Loose, then you will have the Problem you Described. I have 2 Units that have the Hydro-Gear Transaxles (1 is Serviceable and the Other is Not) and Every Time the Unit have Problems Backing Up, I have Found that Replacing the Belt Usually Corrects the Problem.
>>You can Spray the Belt with "Belt Dressing" and if the Unit Backs Up Correctly, then Replace the Belt. If Not, then there May be a Internal Control Valve Problem. The Belt Dressing makes the Belt Tacky and the Belt to Grip the Pulleys Better when the Unit is being Operated.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
