Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): SnowBlower drive train, friction wheel, old briggs

Question
I have a 30 year old Briggs & Stratton snow blower (sorry I don't have the model info with me. 8HP?) that does in reverse but not forward. If you lift the wheels of the ground they will turn but stop once you put them back on the ground). Also it will move a few feet when I first engage it but then stops.

It is driven by a Friction wheel system. The tire wheel is in good shape, I adjusted the spring on the rod that engages the platter. The belt seems to move Ok.

When I first place it in High speed position the mechanism moves the tire wheel to the edge of the platter. Then when I engage the platter is moves a little to the inside.

Also one of the chains on the wheel drive train is very slack - I don't know how this system works or if this is normal.

Is this my problem or is the belt stretched. There is no adjustment that I can see to tighten the belt.

thanks,
tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

If after contacting the B & S website you are not able to retrieve the necessary information, I would suggest picking up a good Small Engine manual in order to determine the cause of the problem.

It sounds like there could be a problem with the gears.

I can not say for sure without a more accurate description of the problem.  Are you sure you you have enough torque provided by the engine?

Let me know,

Howard
