Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): broken pull cord piece on Snapper tiller, hp model, ceramic type

Question
Hello,

I borrowed an older gas powered rear tine Snapper tiller from a neighbor. My husband was attempting to start it, pulled the pull cord and what appeared to be a ceramic type piece broke off from inside the cord housing. I'm trying to figure out what this piece is, if it must replaced or if there is at least a temporary work around to get the engine started! It seems to be some sort of pulley (!?) that the cord engages to turn the shaft that then starts the engine. I'm sure those aren't the technically correct terms. :)

Thanks,
Liz

This site has good directions on repairing starters.

I will need the engine manufacturer, Briggs, Tecumseh, Kohler along with the model, type and code number to look up your specific starter.  The engine information will either be stamped in the metal engine shroud or on a sticker located on the engine.

From what you described, the starter pulley may have broke as most starter pullys are white and may look like ceramic.

If the engine is an 8 hp model there may be another spring and retainer that is broke.  Again, send me the engine information so I can look up the information.
