Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): coil test, Coil defective

Question
I have a Johh Deere snow blower with a Tecumseh HM80 engine on it. It has CDI solid state ignition on it. I have a bad coil I think. This will be the 2nd one I have put on it. The coil number is 35135. Is there a way to check thid coil before I replace it again ?
Please let me know.
thanks
Randy

Answer
Hi Randy,

Remember the coil is a part of the whole starting system, so there may be a problem elsewhere.

Anyhow, to check the coil, look it over (internally or externally).  Look for cracks or other defects which could result in leaking current or shorts.  Check that the leads are solid. Check the entry point (where the leads) enter to the coil.

Check the operation of the coil using an recommended (Tecumseh) testing unit. Tecumseh Products Co Engine & Transmission Group Service Division supply the testing unit with a booklet of instructions.

If you find the coil is defective replace.  If this is the second one,
I would consider why the coil is getting damaged?

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Howard.
