Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kill Switch Wiring, spec number, release lever

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I just got a Craftsman Edger with the 3.5 hp Tecumseh engine.  The operator kill switch wire (grounded when operator releases lever) has been cut and I cannot tell where it is supposed to connect to.  The carb control plate still has the ground wire attached to it and the other end of the ground wire goes to the coil, but neither end of the ground wire has a connector for the operator kill wire.
The online manual doesnt have a clear drawing either.
Also, whats the theory on operation of the kill circuit?
thanks, John

ANSWER: Hi John,
If you can give me the model and spec number of the engine and model number of the edger I can look it up on our breakdown. We see very few edgers come through the shop and to my remembrance all had the kill operated by the throttle. If it has kill release lever, I assume it it set up like a pushmower with engine brake/kill switch made together. Find where the cable from the stop lever attaches to the engine. There should be a connector there with a wire going to the coil. There might be a connector there for the wire coming from the kill lever. Without a breakdown, I'm really just guessing. If you can send me the info. we'll go further.
Thanks,
Keith

QUESTION: Hi Keith, The edger model number is Sears 536.772100.
Engine Model is Sears 143.993502, which if I am correct should refence to Tecumseh LEV100-335010C.
Anyway, the kill release lever connects to engine with just a wire, no brake/cable.  Seems to me the wire should connect somewhere under the shroud, but theres no evidence of where it should connect.
These systems work by grounding the coil correct?  Should be a simple matter to rig up something.  The throttle lever connector for the ground wire is still there, but looks like it might be a little damaged.
thanks! John

Answer
John,
You're right. The system works by grounding out the coil. I'm not at work today, so I'm relying on memory (UH OH!). It should connect under the carb control plate. I think it connects by a 1/4" male spade connector into a plastic (insulated) connector. From that connector should be a wire going to the coil. You could rig a simple kill switch by removing the flywheel housing and drilling a hole to mount a toggle switch that grounds through the body of the switch and connect it to the kill wire going to the coil. Thats how I've done similar ones in the past. It works just fine.
