Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan Chainsaw runs but chain binds, correct pitch, auto stop

Question
QUESTION: I work for a non-profit in Tennessee. We have a Poulan 2775 Chainsaw that starts and runs great, but the chain binds and will not turn. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

ANSWER: Be sure the oiler is putting out oil. If it is, check the sprocket on the engine and on the end of the bar for excess wear. Also check to see if chain is stretched. Hold the chain and see if there is any play in the rivets between the links. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: I've checked all of those, as well as the auto stop feature if the saw were to kick back. (not sure what it's called). The chain will run fine for a little while and then it just stops. The engine sounds like it is trying very hard to run the chain, but it won't move.

Answer
I'm assuming the saw runs OK with the chain off. (?) Has the chain jumped off the bar lately? This will sometimes burr the drive links up and they won't slide through the bar very well. These are the "teeth" that ride in the bar groove. If this isn't it, I would check the compression with a gauge. It should read a minimum of 100 psi cold. It could be the engine is getting weak. Another thought - is this a new chain? If so, it may not be the correct pitch for the sprockets. Let me know what you find.
