Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): honda hs55 snowblower 1984, shear bolts, drive pulley

Question
QUESTION: In order or the auger to work I must hold in the auger clutch and turn it by hand until there is a loud bang then it will work on its own. What could be the problem? It's not the shear bolts.

ANSWER: Hello Melissa:

>>From your Description it Sounds like there May be a Bad Gear in the Auger Gear Box.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram and Select the Catalog American Honda. Select the Snow Blower File. Now Scroll to your Model and Select it. Now you can View a Breakdown of the Section of the Unit you Need to View Online.

QUESTION: Hi John,
So, all the gears seem fine no missing teeth or anything, everything seems to spin freely without a noise when the snowblower is off. We really can't find anything wrong. We have also had alot of broken belts. The friction disc doesn't appear to have rubber on it but Dad says that has nothing to do with the auger and that the drive assembly works fine. We are all stumped!!

ANSWER: Hello Again Melissa:

>>Have you Checked the Drive Pulley? If the Drive Pulley Keyway is Damaged, then you will have the Problem you Described.
>>Do you have a General Idea of Where the Bang is Coming from?
>>Thanks.

QUESTION: Once again John,
We tore the whole snowblower apart down to the bolts and did not find one flaw. After putting it back together it seemed to work just fine like it was never broke. So I guess its fixed! It has always chewed threw belts though, atleast 1 every other week or so, I guess we will just dealwith it. Thanks for your time and patience.

Answer
Hello Again Melissa:

>>That Happens.
>>There May have been a Loose Bolt that was Allowing Something to Move and Cause the Banging Noise. I just Love a Machine that does that to me. I Pull the Unit Apart and Assemble it and I cant Find the Problem, but the Problem is Gone.
>>Those Kinds of Machines give me a Headache, but it Comes with the Profession.
>>I am Glad the Problem was Corrected.
>>Thanks for the Comments and Ratings.
