Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Sitting to long., piston, rust

Question
If a new, high quality kohler PRO CV25S - 25HP engine sat for 8-9 years without being installed, started, or moved, could the piston(s) be seized, or the seals and springs be damaged. I'm thinking of purchasing this engine for my tractor. Can an engine sit this long without moving?

Normally they usually don't sit that long,More like 2-3 years. I would think depending on where they are stored and if the room was dry or heated or cool. If the engine was stored in a temp controlled room,on a shelf with very little moisture it will be ok. Look for sings of rust dirt and moisture. The engines are usually boxed with oil in them, thus one may have the oil as back then they were allowed to ship with oil.I would have the person you are getting this from give you some sort of assurance that it will be fine.Kohler will also give you the warranty as it is still considered a new purchase,I would ask your local Kohler dealer to check for you.You also could go on line to kohler .com and ask for your self from customer service.
