Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCulloch idle, combustion chamber, fuel mixture

Question
Mac Cat 38cc chain saw
Mod - 60016002

My dad gave it to me for spare parts but I decided to try fixing it first. I don't know how or where it came from but the combustion chamber was full of something that resembled oil. I cleaned it out and tried to start it. It will start and run for a second or two but then die. Can you tell me the fuel mixture and what the correct setting for the idle is? Any other advice would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
40:1 on the oil mix.  Are the fuel lines soft and flexible?  If not, odds are the carburetor parts are no longer soft and flexible.  Stiff and brittle carb diaphrams will cause your problem.

If you have a Walbro carb check out this link:

The service manuals tell you how to adjust the idle.

If you have a Zama or Tilliston you can Google there sites as well.
