Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton 2hp 4 stroke motor, briggs stratton, horizontal shaft

Question
Hi Eric, I have a 2 hp B&S motor on my lawn edger (horizontal shaft motor) I
haven't used it for some time and and it wont start I changed the fuel, oil and
plug it has no spark so I cleaned the coil and flywheel on pulling it gave out 1
spark only and now no spark my question is, is there an air gap between the
flywheel and coil, I just made it like paper thin and still no spark or could it
be something else.
Cheers

Answer
If the first 2 digits of the engine code number is smaller than 81xxxxx then the engine has points and condenser.  Most likely the points need to be cleaned and re-gapped to .018.  Another point identifier is if there are any small wires from the ignition coil that run under the flywheel.

I'd recommend installing electronic igntion such as a Nova II module if your engine still has points.  Upgrading to electronic ignition eliminates the points and you will never have to worry about adjusting the points.  Not to mention cost, the Nova II modules are really inexpensive for what they do. You can usually find an electronic ignition kit at most autoparts stores for less than $20.  Well worth the money.

As for the flywheel to coil air gap, .010-015 of an inch is the spec from the repair manual.

Let me know if this helps.
