Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD 319-800A Tecumseh drive engage slow, friction wheel, rubber wheel

Question
I have a 1979 MTD powered by an 8 horse Tecumseh, this machine is nicknamed "jaws" and has served my father and now me for 30 years blowing snow in Maine! During the last use I put the shifter into reverse, it engaged but wheel speed ran at a slower / weaker speed. I inspected the friction wheel assembly, plenty of rubber 1/4". All linkages seemed fine, engagement seemed to press tight. Anything else I'm missing? Drive engages but is 30% the original strength transfered to the wheels, engine runs the same, has to be in the clutch / drive system? Thanks for your help in advance, I read many of your posts through searches, you're expertise is rare in this world.

Answer
Hello Tom:

Check the Linkage that Operates the Drive Assy. The Rubber Wheel is Not Moving as Properly and is causing the Unit to Move Slower than Usual. On this Unit Loose or Sloppy Connections in the Linkage is the Usual  Cause of this Problem. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
