Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): rover ride-on, correct filter, pump fuel

Question
dear eric
the above mower has a 14hp briggs engine ,vanguard model 26177. seems to be starved of petrol. tap removed from tank, very good flow, with tap in, hose removed, limited flow, cleaned filter, no better, have fitted an inline filter after pump, petrol seems to trickle into filter, and when mower starts to miss, filter appears empty though still trickling from pump, question should i have a greater flow from tank and pump. if pump is suspect is it a vacuum operated diaphargm. is it difficult to replace, eg pre loaded, appreciate any advice you can give me. regards ,bill

Answer
Double check the model number...seems to be a digit short.  Also need the four (4) digit type number.

Remove spark plug.  Dis-connect fuel line at carb.  Crank engine.  If you have an external fuel pump fuel should squirt out the line.  There are 3 different filters Briggs sells depending on your fuel system configuration.  The paper inside the different filters are differnt sizes measured in microns.

Honestly, I've never noticed much difference in the filter, other than the color, but we always use the correct filter identified in the engine parts list.

Send me the number so I can look up you specific filter.
