Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Snow Thrower, sears craftsman, craftsman snow thrower

Question
QUESTION: I have a Craftsman Snow Thrower, model 486.248401. I am
trying to replace the gear assembly. I have removed
everything up until the the bearing, ball. On the other
side there are spiral pins hold the auger on to the shaft.
I can not get out the pins to remove it that way. So I need
to remove the bearing from the backside. I have tried to
pull the bearing off but it does not budge. Is there a
trick to removing this bearing? Thanks the part number for
that bearing is 741-0309. Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Drew:

This may be a MTD made for Sears/Craftsman. Can you Check the Model Numbers Of this Unit, Please. I cannot Locate a Model with the Numbers you Provided. A Model Number would Help me Assist you Better. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Use the Model Locator Just Under the Model Search Box at the Right of the Page. Thanks. Some of these Bearing have to be Pressed In and Out. Usually a Small Amount of Heat will Release the Bearing from the Bearing Seat. Heat can Also make the Removal of the Spiral Pins Easier Also. Thanks. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. May you have a Happy Holiday Season. Be Safe and Happy.

QUESTION: Main thing is I need to know how to remove a ball bearing
from a shaft that spins the auger. Here is everything is
detail. I have a Craftsman Snow Thrower Model # 486.248401.
A gear broke in the gear assembly. I need to replace! I
live in Wisconsin and I am getting pounded with snow so I
am dire need of help. I have removed everything off of the
gear assemble including everything up to the impeller
assembly with to spiral pins. I can not remove those pins
because there isn't much room to work and the are rusted
in. On the other side I have removed the pulley. There is a
bearing no showing and it doesn't want to budge. There is a
small hole that seems like a hold to knock off the outer
part of the bearing to hold the bearing to the shaft. I
can't seem to knock it off though. Is there anything I need
to be doing or a trick to either remove the spiral pins or
the ball bearing? I have used heat and penetrating oil
doesn't seem to help. I have pictures if you would like so
see the problem. But thanks for all your help and I hope we
can get this fixed soon. P.S. I tried to find the model of
the snow thrower but they seem to have deleted it. It is
almost identical to this on the sears website. Sears item#
07124838000 Mfr. model# 24838
Thank you so much for all the help!!

ANSWER: Hello Again Drew:

I have Preformed Maintenance on Several Model and Types of Snow Blowers/Throwers and without Seeing the Breakdown, I am Unsure of the Type of Gear Box in this Unit. I was Unable to Locate the Sears Unit Using the Item# or the Model Numbers you Sent me. If you have Good Pictures, then I May be Able to Assist you Using them. I have Microfiche for the Older Sears Model and was Unable to Locate the Model Numbers you Sent me on these. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thank you for trying to help and sorry about the confusion
about what model it is. I have found an online manual and I
have uploaded pictures to a picture storage website. The
manual is located at
http://c.sears.com/assets/own/24838e.pdf and the pictures
are located at
http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/Drewsterritz/Craftsman
%20Snow%20Thrower/ Sorry if this is a bigger hassle then
what you normally deal with I am just in need of help
badly. The part I need to remove is number 32 on the manual
on page 24 and I need to remove number 24 on the same page.
Number 32 is a ball bearing and number 24 are spiral pins.
I have tried using heat and penetrating oil on both. I have
also tried to remove the ball bearing by using a punch in
the small hole and knock it left or right but I do not have
a lot of room to do so. If you can help at all that would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Drew:

No Worries. No Hassle. This is Not as Complicated as Some of the Questions I have can Get and Sometimes there is More Confusion Trying to Locate the Correct Model. As a Last Resort you May have to Drill Out the Spiral Pins to Remove them. I Noticed the Spiral Pins have Not been Cut Down Flush with the Shaft. Use a Die Grinder and Carefully Cut the Spiral Pins so they are Even with the Shaft. Now Try the Punch. If they Still will Not Move, then Drill them Out. The Bearing in Picture #6 of 17 Shows a Stop/Set Shoulder on the Shaft. Is this Correct? According to the Breakdown for the Model you Sent this Last Time, you Remove the Auger Drive Pulley, the Bearing Housing and then the Bearing is Supposed to Slide Off (or Removed with a Puller) the Shaft and the Impeller and Auger Gear Assy Slide Out of the Auger Housing in the Direction Away from the Auger Drive Pulley. If the Picture is Showing a Bearing Stop on the Shaft of the Bearing, then this Model has 2 Ball Bearings in the Housing before the Impeller and the Spiral Pins have to be Removed so the Impeller can be Removed from the Shaft and then the Shaft can be Removed from the Auger Housing in the Direction of the Auger Drive Pulley. Judging from the Condition of the Shaft and Bearing in Picture #6, I Suggest you Cut the End of the Shaft Off and then Remove the Bearing. Then Place the Shaft into a Vice and Remove the Spiral Pins. When Replacing the Components, Use "Never Seize" on the Components to Prevent Rust and Corrosion from Causing this Problem the Next Time this Unit has to be Serviced. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
