Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GXV 140 valve timing, camshaft timing, gear teeth

Question
I am in the process of rebuilding a Honda GXV 140 engine off of a Honda Masters series walk behind mower, model HRM215 K1 HMA.  I am trying to align the camshaft and crankshaft, the manual says there should be timing marks on the camshaft timing gear and the crankshaft gear, however my crankshaft gear does not have a timing mark.  I have looked on both the frontside and backside of the crank gear and haven't found a mark, is there any other timing reference that I could use to properly align the crank and camshaft?

Answer
Hello Daniel:

There should be a Mark (-) on 1 of the Crankshaft Gear Teeth and a (.) Mark Between 1 of the Teeth on the Camshaft. I have Many of these Honda Engines Apart and have Never Seen 1 without Timing Marks on these Gears. Sorry, but I am Unable to Assist you Further. Maybe 1 of the Other Experts Knows of Another Reference Point to Set the Timing with. Thanks for Using All Experts. Till Next Time. May All Your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks Again for Using All Experts.
