Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Echo CS-4400 wont pull start., echo chainsaw, model cs

Question
I have an 18" Echo Chainsaw, model CS-4400.  It gets used sparingly and I had never encountered any problems with it.  The last use was in June and, as usual, I had no problems.  Just recently I tried to start it, but the pull start will not budge.  The recoil mechanism checks out okay, as does the automatic safety brake.  I've checked as closely as I know how and have found no obstructions.  Someone suggested that a "vapor lock" could be the cause.  Is that a possibility?  If so, what's the remedy?  What else can I check for before taking it in for repair?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hello Al:

Does the Engine Turn with the Spark Plug Removed? Did you Check the Exhaust Port and Muffler? If Either of these are Restricted with Carbon Deposits, then the Engine May Run at Idle but will Flood when you Try to Rev the Engine above Idle or the Engine can Act like it is Vapor Locked and Not Move at All. The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated. **Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear. If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off. If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required. Has the Ign Module/Coil Loosened? If the Ign Module/Coil has Loosened, then it will Lock against the Flywheel and Lock the Engine. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Unit at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Echo) and Enter the Model (CS-4400). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View. Thanks.
