Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): atv timing, dowel pin, compression stroke

Question
I have a 1998 600 Yamaha grizzly atv, replaced rings and did a valve job, how do I time the cam, how do I determine the piston is tdc on the compression stroke, I only removed head and jug, do I need to disassemble further for timing marks

Answer
Hello Gary:

Rotate the Engine Until the Piston is at the Top of the Cylinder. Install the Head. The Engine is at TDC and Once the Head is Installed, the Cam is Set so the Dowel Pin that Holds the Cam Gear is Supposed to be Straight Up in Line with the Engine. You can See the Timing Mark on the Cylinder Head also. If you Plan on Keeping this ATV for a While, I Suggest you Purchase a Service Manual. The Manual will Assist you in Keeping it Running Like New for Years to come. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
