Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower Will Not Crank, blade switch, jumper wire

Question
I have an Ariens Zoom 1540 mower, when I turn the key I receive one click and nothing else.  Will click each time I turn the key.  Put a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to the starter connection and it turned over.  Then put the positive lead to the starter side of the solenoid and it turned over.  Do you have any idea what to check next?

Answer
It would need to be checked the same as any another electric start. You first must assure yourself the battery is fully charged. Remove the battery terminals and clean them well, battery side, and the cable ends. Sometimes a click will indicate a bad connection. With a test light, or voltage meter you'll need to check the ignition switch to make sure it is operating correctly when the key is turned. Then see if the correct terminal is getting power when the key is turned, on the solenoid. You can forget the starter, your initial check rules that out as a problem. You MUST also check each safety switch, seat switch, blade switch, reverse switch, clutch switch, etc...and what ever switches your model has. Check all fuses. If everything else checks out fine, your then looking at the solenoid needing replacement.....Tom
