Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh AH600-1622M, reed valves, reed valve

I was given a Toro S-620 snow thrower with a Tecumseh AH600 2 cycle engine.  It will not start.  It won't even try to start. I pull the starter cord and feel no resistance (ie. little to no compression). I removed the spark plug and checked the ignition and it sparks. The plug tip was wet with gas. I took the precausion and drained all the old gas with the intension of using fresh gas at a later time. Does the AH600 have a reed valve between the engine and carb? also, does this engine have a compression release? I was thinking that since gas was in the combustion chamber and the ignition works there might be a compression leak.

This engine does not have a retail or compression release the best test.  You could do would be compression test and it should be around 90 PSI.  You could have a leaking head gasket causing the same problem so cold that had bolts and replace the gasket you'll have to remove the starter and a blower housing assembly to be able to do this.  When you have the head off inspect the cylinder crosshatch should still be visible on the cylinder walls.  If not you may consider putting in a short block.  Many years ago Tecumseh head Reed valves on the side of the cylinder.  You'll notice a plate about an inch and a half long and 1/4 inch-wide attached to the cylinder.  Above the carburetor.  If it is there remove the screws and you will find an inner and outer Reed valve.  Replace them and install a new gasket.  I hope this is answered your questions and helps you resolve your problems best of luck on your project.
