Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 520 Snowblower, john deere 520, safety switches

Question
I have acquired a John Deere 520 snowblower that does not fire when I try to start it. Upon further inspection I have found that the wire that goes from the on/off key (part #PT9679 from link http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H...) is not connected to anything. At one point it was attached to a tab, and the tab fell off. I can’t seem to find where that wire is supposed to attach to. Can you help?

Answer
Hello Mike:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers 520 and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. On this Model Engine, the Shut Off Wire Attaches to the Shut Off Terminal on the Speed Control Bracket. A Wire form this Terminal goes to the Coil to Ground it so the Plug Stops Firing and the Engine Quits. This would Not be the Cause for No Fire at the Plug. The Following is a Basic Instruction File I Made for Checking the Coil/Ign Coil/Magnetron on Small Engines. Any Input is Appreciated. **To Check the Ign Coil; Remove the Spark Plug/s. Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of the Plug and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). The Wire that is Connected to the Coil/Ign Module from the Shut Off Switch needs to be Removed (unplugged) from the Coil/Ign Module. Now Check for Spark at the Plug. If Spark, then the Shut Off Switch or the Wire is Bad. If Still No Spark, then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. If there are Safety Switches on this Unit and the Coil is Good; you Need to Check the Safety Switches for Being Bad Also.** If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
