Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ryobi 725r weed eater, engine shaft, several different ways

Question
I am trying to get the clutch off of the engine shaft to get into the rope pull and fly wheel.  I have the cover off.  I have tried several different ways to get it off.  Is their and easy way to get it off.

Answer
Are you able to get the clutch drum off?  If so, you should see the clutch.

Get a piece of old starter cord.  Tie several knot in the cord.  Remove the spark plug and insert the knots through the spark plug hole.  Make sure you leave plenty of rope hanging out so you can remove it.

Use a large, very large, set of plyers to unscrew the clutch.  Most are left hand threads and are usually marked with an arrow.  A clutch removal tool is prefered, but you can get by with large plyers.

The knots in the rope keep the piston from turning so you can remove the clutch.

Let me know if this helps.
