Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumpseh carb pinhole, epoxy paste, starter fluid

Question
QUESTION: Hi, hope you can help,  I just came into a John Deere TRS32 snowblower with a 10hp tecumpseh motor.  The unit has been sitting for several years so I went ahead and tore the carb down and soaked it overnight. got the rebuild kit from john deere and put it back together.  Now when I ran gas to it there was a pinhole in the side of the carb so when I hit the primer bulb gas sprayed out everywhere.  is this normal??? if not can I use something like epoxy paste to plug the hole or am I missing a gasket or something.   the hole is in the side of the carb near some part numbers, but not along any lines or cracks.

any help is appreciated

ANSWER: More than likely the hole was always there that's because your carburetor is a casting and not a piece of solid aluminum.  When these castings are formed there is usually a  coating put on them.  Soaking the carburetor will bring out those holes if the aluminum as the flaw in it.

When question I would have about hole location is it located in a round indention in the carburetor where it Welch plug would go?  If not go ahead and epoxy the whole.  It could also be someone replaced the original carburetor with one that had provisions for a carbon mounted primer.  Either way it should be fine.  If you want to try something before going to epoxy you could try clear fingernail polish.  Best of luck.

QUESTION: cool no more leak--- now next problem.  The throttle- I dont know if I didnt pay enough attention to the throttle linkages when I took them off or if the spring on the lever is bad but when I move the throttle lever nothing else moves- not even the linkage coming off of it.  Theres a spring on the lever that I'm pretty sure didn't move but who knows..

I sprayed some starter fluid in the carb and cranked it, it ran for about 4 seconds- long enough for the starter fluid to burn off- but it wont start now.

I have spark, new fuel lines and rebuild kit. Again any help would be awesome.

Answer
When you move the throttle lever you should tighten the governor spring.  Most trials are adjustable where the casing attaches to the throttle control assembly.  Put the throttle in the wide-open position and loosen the screw holding the casing then place your throttle plate in a wide-open position hold it in place and tighten the screw holding the casting if there is a separate choke cable it would be adjusted similarly.  If the governor spring is damaged it should be replaced now if there is a link and a spring going to the governor the link opens the throttle when the governor needs it in the spring tries to close so it would be attach to appropriate sides or holes in the throttle plate.  There are many different configurations tri-the engine manufacturer's website and using your model and serial number you should be able to find the correct configuration.  Use their search option to quickly find manuals.  You should be able to get it going from there.  Good luck
