Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): g200 honda motor problem, engine lacks power

Question
I have a g200 197cm3 Honda motor on a go kart, the motor runs great when it's off the ground and on blocks but when I sit on it and give it gas it shuts off. I have had someone push me to get moving and then I give it gas and it will go. I have changed gas from unleaded to supreme no change and I changed the oil.

Answer
Hi Jared,

RE: Lack of Power Honda Motor,

Check to make sure the fuel tank is at least half full. The ratio oil-gas is correct - and gas is getting to the carb.  Check all your fuel lines for any blockages or kinks.

Check air filter to make certain it is not clogged up.

Take out the spark plug and check that the gap is set correctly.
You can file the electrodes with a fine file so that the electrode tip is squared.  [Check spec's with Honda Manual]

Check and see if the spark plug is firing correctly. Does it need to be changed?  Check if there is a carbon deposit on the exhaust port and or muffler.  Usually the muffler has to be taken off to do this.

Check to see if the carb is adjusted properly.

Check choke and throttle controls and make certain they are not allowing the valves to move when the engine is operating.

If the crankcase is not airtight the engine can sometimes lack power.

Worn piston rings or cylinder damage can result in reduced power output.  check compression from engine. Could be leaking valves, incorrect valve tappet clearances, leak in the head gasket.  A compression check should help you to find out what might be wrong.

Good luck,

Howard
