Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): generator problem, vacuum leak, gererator

Question
i have a ust  GG5500 series gas generator.while i was using the gererator it started to rev up to full throttle.i turned it off and started it up again and it went full throttle.i checked and all the springs are on the carb.i can control the rpm by holding the linkage but as soon as i let go it revs back up.

Answer
Hi Jack,

This problem is also known as 'Hunting and Surging.'

Check for the linkages + springs - Are they moving freely & is governor spring inserted properly

Further try to have the engine running at several speed settings. See if you can figure out when the hunting and surging is most prominent. If it's happening while you are truly idling then the air-fuel mix should be checked.  A vacuum leak or a complication with the carb is probably causing the air fuel mix to be wrong.

If it happens at top speed then move the throttle lever so the plate is in the open position. If the problem doesn't correct itself then the problem is likely with the carb.  Clean and adjust it.  Lube the governor to correct any problem there.  If the problem persists then you might want to replace the governor.

There are engines that have a separate governor idle spring.
There might be some adjustment to do there.

Good Luck,

Howard
