Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8 horse tecumseh horizontal HM80, lawnmower engines, valve clearances

Question
i have an 8hp tecumseh (HM80) snowblower engine that will start and idle perfectly, but when you raise the engine speed it will die, if you turn it back down low when it starts to die it will stay running, i have tried a different carb from a brand new perfect running chipper and it does the exact same thing, (chipper ran excellent)
i am very good with small engines and rebuild chainsaws and lawnmower engines, but this one has me stumped. fuel line is new gas tank is clean, any ideas? adjusting the carb has little effect on this condition.
it acts just like you turned off the ignition.

Answer
Hello Mike:

What is the Compression? Are you Sure the Intake gaskets are Sealing Properly? Are the Valve Clearances Correct? Is the Point Set Gapped Correctly? The Point Set Cover, Under the Flywheel Usually has the Point Set Gap Stamped into it. .015in or .020in. are Used for the Gap on All Point Set Engines. If the Cover Does Not have the Gap Stamped into it, then Use the .015in Gap First. I have Seen the Point Set Gap be to Close/Wide and the Engine Responded the Way you Described. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
