Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): GCV 160 Honda engine, kawasaki motors, honda engine

Question
I have a log splitter with a GCV 160 Honda engine.  When I start it the engine will surge a few times and then die.  The only way it will run is if you keep the choke closed. Any suggestions.

Answer
I just answered a very similar question. Honda and Kawasaki motors have very weak governor gears. They easily break, and I think your's might have broken. The governor gear is a gear found inside the crankcase housing that runs off of the camshaft. If you don't feel comfortable replacing it yourself, take it to a shop...but be careful. Make sure you have the exact same part. The springs on the gear are very fine-tuned. Hope I helped.
