Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GX 240, small engine mechanic, honda gx

Question
Tom:

I have a Tsrumi generator with an 8.0 Honda GX 240.  I rarely use it.
Would not run.  Cleaned carb, changed fuel.  Now it will start and run, but
only with full choke.  If the choke is opened it stops.  If the throttle is opened
and the choke butterfly held fully closed it will rev, but if the throttle is
opened the choke butterfly vibrates and the engine dies.
Any ideas.  It was running fine when I last tested it.

Answer
Your carburetor needs attention. It needs to be cleaned PROPERLY, the main jet circuit is still restricted, and can't pull fuel from the bowl. I get 20 of these type emails a week, usually a non-small engine mechanic doesn't know the right way to clean a carb. They say each time they cleaned it, but unless you know the carb you can't. There are a number of tiny fuel passages, and circuits inside the carb that needs to be cleaned out with a ultra thin metal wire. Should you do it wrong you'll ruin the carb for good. You must go gently into each and every hole, and crevasse. Replace the needle, and seat, check the float height, and adjust if it is a adjustable type float. Clear each, and every hole in the bolt holding the float bowl on. Check the float to make sure no fuel has passed into it, making the float heavy, this is done by shaking it close to your era and listening carefully, for any sloshing of fuel inside. That's how you correctly clean, and service a carb.........Tom
